DanceId · Privacy Policy

What DanceId does with your microphone, and where it stops.

Effective 7 September 2026

DanceId listens to a short recording to identify a dance style, and by default that recording never leaves your phone. This page covers the one exception, and everything else the app touches.

At a glance

Identifying a song

The ~15-second recording is processed entirely on your device. It's discarded after the result appears, and never uploaded anywhere.

Correcting a result

Only if you tap "None of these" or an alternative style: that one clip and your corrected label are uploaded, so a future version of the model can learn from it.

Your identity

An anonymous, random ID is assigned to your install — no name, email, phone number, or account, ever.

Advertising

Not shown in the current version. A future update will add a small banner ad, through a third-party ad network — see below.

Everything else

No analytics, no location, no contacts, nothing sold to data brokers.

01 — Microphone audio

Recordings stay on your phone unless you correct one

When you tap to identify a song, DanceId records audio from your microphone for about 15 seconds. That audio is converted to a spectrogram and run through a small classification model directly on your device — the recording is never sent to us, to Google, or to anyone else, and it's discarded as soon as a result is shown.

The one exception is the correction feature. If DanceId gets it wrong and you tap a different style (or pick one from the full list), that specific recording — and only that one — is uploaded, along with the style you told us it actually was. This is entirely optional and only happens when you choose to correct a result.

02 — What a correction contains

Audio clip, corrected label, nothing more

A submitted correction consists of exactly three things:

Corrections are stored using Firebase (Google Cloud Storage and Cloud Firestore), and are used solely to periodically retrain and improve DanceId's on-device model. They are not reviewed individually except as part of that retraining, not used for advertising, and not shared with any other third party.

03 — Anonymous identity

No account, no sign-in, no personal information

DanceId has no accounts and never asks for your name, email address, or phone number. On first launch, Firebase Anonymous Authentication silently assigns your install a random identifier. Its only purpose is to attach an upper limit to how many corrections one install can submit, so the correction feature can't be abused. It identifies a device, not a person, and is never linked to any personal information because we never collect any.

04 — Advertising

Not shown yet — planned for a future version

The current version of DanceId shows no advertising. A future version will add a small banner ad at the bottom of the screen, served by a third-party ad network (expected to be Google AdMob). When that ships:

This section will be updated with the specific network in use before the ad-supported version is released.

05 — What DanceId doesn't do

No analytics, no tracking beyond ads

Outside of the advertising described above, DanceId contains no analytics or crash-reporting trackers, no access to your contacts, photos, or location, and shares no data with data brokers. The microphone permission exists for exactly one purpose — identifying the dance style of what it hears while you're actively using the app.

06 — Retention & deletion

Corrections can be deleted on request

Ordinary identification audio is never stored anywhere to begin with, so there is nothing to retain or delete. If you've submitted a correction and would like it removed, contact us with the approximate date and dance style you corrected, and we'll delete the matching clip.

07 — Changes to this policy

We'll update the date above

If DanceId's data practices change, this page will be updated and the effective date at the top will change with it. Continuing to use the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
